Colombian society has been highly stratified since the 16th century. Estratos (strata) is a ranking system currently in use, designed to identify persons and provide essential services at affordable rates to the poor. The ranking is from six (highest) to one (lowest).
A refrain heard often from los desplazados – "I am strato zero."
